The Independence Monument was built in 1958 during the reign of King Norodom Suramarit (1955–1960) as a symbol representing Cambodia's independence from France in 1953. The monument is located at the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard, in the heart of Phnom Penh.
It was designed by the renowned Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann.
