French Old Buildings

French Old Buildings

This is the Post Office Building of Phnom Penh, which was originally constructed in 1894. The building was completely renovated in 2004, and it reflects the distinctive style of French architecture.

Directly in front of the Post Office Building is L’Hotel Manolis, which was built in 1910. At that time, it was the only luxury hotel in Phnom Penh.

After the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime, people returned to the city and used the hotel as a place to live, according to whatever means they could afford. Unfortunately, over time, the hotel fell into a severely deteriorated condition. Only the ground floor has been beautifully renovated and restored, giving it an elegant and luxurious appearance.

Waterfall in Southeast Asia

Waterfall in Southeast Asia

Sopheak Mit Waterfall, commonly known as Preah Nimith Waterfall or Lbak Khaon, is a large and spectacular natural attraction located along the Upper Mekong River in northern Cambodia. It forms a natural boundary between Preah Vihear Province and Stung Treng Province in Cambodia, bordering Champasak Province, Laos.

The upper section of Sopheap Mit Rapids is located in Preah Vihear Province, in Kampong Preah Ind village, Kampong Sralau Pir Commune, Chhaeb District. Local people and older textbooks have commonly referred to it as Lbak Khaon or Preah Nimith Waterfall.

The lower section of Sopheak Mit Waterfall is located in Stung Treng Province, near Preah Romkel Commune, Thala Barivat District. The name Sopheak Mit Waterfall, or Lbak Khaon, has been passed down through generations and is also found in older songs and textbooks.

Sopheak Mit Waterfall is one of the world’s most remarkable waterfalls; this spectacular natural wonder ranks fourth globally by volume and is recognized as the widest waterfall in the world, spanning nearly 10 kilometers. It is also the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia. Here, the Mekong River dramatically drops 21 meters along the Laos–Cambodia border. Despite holding several impressive records, the waterfall remains a hidden gem in Cambodia due to its isolated location.

In the rainy season, the river carries a tremendous volume of water, creating powerful, turbulent rapids with spectacular waves and foaming water.
And in the dry season (approximately November to May) is generally the best time for recreation, as the water is clearer and calmer. Visitors can enjoy the water or relax in small shelters built among the rocky areas.

Preah Romkel Tourism Community is located near the Sopheak Mit Waterfall. This community offers visitors opportunities to take boat trips through flooded forests, go kayaking, and camp in the surrounding natural environment.

Today, improved road infrastructure has made the area much more accessible than it was in the past. From Stung Treng City, the site is approximately 60 kilometers away, with the journey following National Road 9 before continuing onto local roads. From Preah Vihear Provincial Town, the site is about 170 kilometers away, making it a relatively convenient destination for visitors traveling from either location.

Man hill and Woman hill in Kampong Cham

Man hill and Woman hill in Kampong Cham

If traveling from Phnom Penh along National Road No. 7, continue until kilometer marker 116, then turn northeast. About 1 kilometer from the national road, on the left-hand side, you will see two mountains standing side by side. The taller mountain is Phnom Srei, meaning “Woman Mountain,” while the lower one is Phnom Bros, meaning “Man Mountain.” Both mountains offer beautiful scenery and are popular cultural and natural attractions.

On Phnom Bros stands a pagoda called Wat Sovannakiri Ratanak Phnom Bros. Approximately 400 meters east of Phnom Bros is another mountain with a pointed peak, Phnom Srei. Covered in lush green vegetation, Phnom Srei is particularly beautiful and eye-catching.

Phnom Bros has a hill-like shape and is only about 30 meters high, making it lower than Phnom Srei. A road leads up to the top of the mountain, where a temple is built in the style of Banteay Srei Temple. From the top of Phnom Bros, visitors can enjoy beautiful views, breathe fresh air, and even feed the monkeys in the area.

Phnom Srei, meanwhile, is higher than Phnom Bros and has a staircase with 217 steps leading to the top. At the summit, visitors can see an old temple and several sacred sites.

The two mountains are connected to a fascinating legend and an important Khmer tradition that continues to be practiced today.

The Legend Behind Phnom Bros and Phnom Srei

According to the legend, in ancient times, Khmer tradition required women to propose marriage to men. To encourage men to propose to women instead, the women challenged the men to a competition. Both sides agreed to build a mountain by piling up earth. Whoever built the higher mountain would be declared the winner, while the losing side would have to follow the agreed-upon terms and propose marriage to the other side.

The women eventually used a clever strategy and won the competition by building their mountain higher than the men's mountain. The men lost the challenge and therefore had to propose marriage to the women.

According to the legend, this is why the traditional Khmer custom developed in which the man's family traditionally approaches the woman's family to ask for her hand in marriage.

Today, Phnom Bros (Man Hill) and Phnom Srei (Woman Hill) are not only scenic tourist destinations but also places associated with a fascinating Khmer legend and the history of traditional Cambodian marriage customs. The story of these two mountains continues to be passed down from generation to generation as an important part of Khmer cultural heritage.

According to various historical records, Phnom Sampov is mentioned in many Khmer folktales. The mountain has also been celebrated in several songs composed during the 1960s, making it an enduring symbol of Khmer culture.

Today, Phnom Sampov is gaining even greater historical prominence with the addition of a massive rock carving on the mountainside. This remarkable cliff sculpture illustrates the story of the Buddha's origin.

The giant rock carving depicting the Buddha's origin is a great source of pride for Battambang Province. It is located along National Road 57 in Phnom Sampov Commune, Banan District, approximately 13 kilometers west of Battambang City.

Phnom Sampov rises to an elevation of approximately 140 meters and features more than 800 concrete steps leading to its summit. From a distance, the mountain resembles a traditional Khmer sailing boat (sampov), from which it takes its name.

At the top of the mountain stands the ancient pagoda. Visitors can enjoy the fresh mountain air while admiring the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding villages and vast rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see.
