According to various historical records, Phnom Sampov is mentioned in many Khmer folktales. The mountain has also been celebrated in several songs composed during the 1960s, making it an enduring symbol of Khmer culture.

Today, Phnom Sampov is gaining even greater historical prominence with the addition of a massive rock carving on the mountainside. This remarkable cliff sculpture illustrates the story of the Buddha's origin.

The giant rock carving depicting the Buddha's origin is a great source of pride for Battambang Province. It is located along National Road 57 in Phnom Sampov Commune, Banan District, approximately 13 kilometers west of Battambang City.

Phnom Sampov rises to an elevation of approximately 140 meters and features more than 800 concrete steps leading to its summit. From a distance, the mountain resembles a traditional Khmer sailing boat (sampov), from which it takes its name.

At the top of the mountain stands the ancient pagoda. Visitors can enjoy the fresh mountain air while admiring the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding villages and vast rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see.
