Rising gracefully from Yeli Island in Zhuhai, a coastal city in south China’s Guangdong Province, the Zhuhai Grand Theater stands as the nation’s only opera house built on an island. With a total construction area of 59,000 square meters, this architectural masterpiece has become a defining landmark of Zhuhai.
The theater’s distinctive design features two large and two small shells—collectively known as the “Sun and Moon Shells”—the tallest of which reaches 90 meters in height. Inspired by The Birth of Venus, the renowned painting that depicts the goddess of love and beauty emerging from a shell, the design celebrates both elegance and vitality. The concept also draws from Zhuhai’s deep maritime heritage, symbolizing the city’s pioneering spirit as mainland China’s first urban center to embrace oceanic civilization.
