Banteay Chhmar Temple of Jayavarman VII—Cambodia

Banteay Chhmar Temple is a site of immense historical value and mystery, located in Banteay Chhmar village, Banteay Chhmar commune, Thma Puok district, Banteay Meanchey province. Constructed in the late 12th to early 13th century during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, the temple has been proposed by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is increasingly attracting both national and international tourists for sightseeing and recreation.

King Jayavarman VII built the temple to honor the spirit of his son, King Srindrakumara, as well as the spirits of four generals who sacrificed their lives in battle against the Cham army. The temple’s gallery walls feature intricate carvings that depict historical events, religious ceremonies, royal affairs, Khmer-Cham battles, daily life, and marketplace scenes—similar to those found at the Bayon Temple.

Today, many residents and authorities believe that Banteay Chhmar holds sacred and powerful energy, drawing visitors who seek blessings, peace, and personal prosperity.

Unfortunately, the temple has suffered extensive damage due to both human and natural causes. During Cambodia’s civil war, looters illegally excavated and smuggled ancient artifacts, causing structural collapse and deterioration. Natural disasters, such as storms, have also led to fallen trees, further damaging the site.

Restoration efforts are currently underway, funded by the World Heritage Fund through UNESCO Cambodia, the Royal Government of Cambodia, and private contributions from Lok Chumteav Mao Malay Ke Kimyan. The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has submitted documentation to nominate Banteay Chhmar as a World Heritage Site, highlighting its unique features that distinguish it from other temples. These include surrounding ancient burial grounds, 32 hand-carved stone sculptures, and multiple satellite temples. The entire site spans over 27 hectares.

Today, the temple is well protected and preserved through collaborative efforts between local authorities and the government. With clean roads, reliable security, and its convenient location—approximately 65 kilometers from the provincial capital of Banteay Meanchey via National Road 56A—Banteay Chhmar is becoming a major attraction for international tourists seeking both cultural and historical experiences.
