The Sultan Abdul Samad Building remains the city’s most celebrated landmark in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. On the midnight of August 31, 1957, this very square witnessed the lowering of the British Union Jack and the raising of the Malayan flag, marking the country’s independence.
