Mondulkiri Province, located in eastern Cambodia, is the largest province in the country, covering approximately 14,288 square kilometers. Despite its vast area, it is the least populated, with only about 92,213 residents as of the 2019 census.
Mondulkiri is renowned for its impressive natural scenery, including lush green mountains, dense forests, and spectacular waterfalls. The province is a haven for eco-tourism and nature enthusiasts.
The province was established in 1961 by His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk, the Father of the Nation. It was founded to uphold Cambodian independence, territorial integrity, and national unity. At its inception, the province consisted of three districts: Koh Nhek, Chbar, and O'Raing.
Mondulkiri lies 382 kilometers from Phnom Penh, with Sen Monorom City serving as the provincial capital. Sen Monorom is known for its scenic hills and cool climate.
The province shares a 312.3-kilometer border with Vietnam, neighboring the Vietnamese provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, and Binh Phuoc. Domestically, it borders Stung Treng and Ratanakkiri to the north and Kratie to the west.
Approximately 80% of the population are indigenous people, while the remaining 20% includes Khmer, Chinese, and Cham people. There are eight indigenous ethnic groups in the province: Phnong, Kraol, Kreung, Stieng, Tumpoun, Charay, Thmoun, Kavet. The population’s livelihoods are primarily based on: Agriculture (82%), Services (17%), Handicrafts (1%).
Key Tourist Attractions you shouldn't miss:
1- Phnom Dok Kramom located near Sen Monorom, this hill offers a panoramic view of the city and is a favorite sunset spot. It also features a monument respected by both indigenous people and Khmer people.
2- Bousra Waterfall situated in Pechada District, 38 km from Sen Monorom, Bousra is one of Cambodia’s most beautiful waterfalls. It is ideal for sightseeing, lunch picnics, and swimming.
As this province shares a border with Vietnam, for bilateral cooperation, Mondulkiri province has 3 main border gates:
1-Lapa Khe Gate (Keo Seima District)
2- Dak Dam Gate (O’Raing District)
3- Nam Liar Gate (Pechada District)
In particular, a fourth gate, Chi Miet Gate in Koh Nhek District, is not yet operationa ldue to the lack of road infrastructure.
Mondulkiri has been designated as Cambodia’s fourth economic pole, after Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk, and Siem Reap, highlighting its emerging importance in national development.
